Tokyo Olympics 2020 | Inside Japan's mascot mania



Known in Japan as Yuru-chara, it’s fair to say that Japan has a mascot obsession that we don’t really understand in the UK. These strange yet cute characters are used to represent all sorts. We’re familiar with the idea of mascots for a sports team, but in Japan they are used to represent regions, businesses, organisations and events. So naturally, Japan created mascots for the Olympics and Paralympics – Miraitowa and Someity.

In this video, travel reporter Greg Dickinson takes a look at the weird and wonderful world of mascots and why they are so important in Japan.
