Mid-1850s, Satsuma domain, Japan. The country is in the throes of the end of the Tokugawa period, with foreign influence and incursion ever-increasing. While a few see the inevitability of change, many cling to the shogunate and the traditional way of life. Tomoatsu Godai is a young man with a radical vision for the future, a vision that puts him at odds with most of his domain.
Godai believes that by learning technology used overseas, he can transform the country and bring Japan into the modern age.
